Chez Roman Ondà k l’exposition est à la fois un espace performatif et une zone de mise à distance où des temps parallèles se croisent, où l’expérience individuelle se mêle à la pratique sociale. Son oeuvre se trouve aux limites physiques et psychologiques de notre perception et l’espace d’exposition devient le réceptacle d’expériences humaines, un lieu questionnant la représentation et l’interprétation, la réalité et sa remise en scène.
A partir de la réalité donnée d’un lieu, d’une expérience, l'artiste déploie des fictions de manière informelle; il place son décor et son sujet, et la scène se rejoue à l’infini par le biais de différents filtres. La mémoire y occupe une place importante parce qu'elle implique les réminiscences d’un vécu, mais aussi parce qu’elle offre un espace plus libre à l'imagination et à l'inconscient.
Que ce soit sous la forme d'installations ou de performances, le travail de Roman Ondák demande souvent au spectateur d’y regarder à deux fois, le faisant se questionner sur la perception ou la conscience qu’il a des codes et comportements sociaux. Ses ‘micro mises en scènes’ ou ‘anti évènements’ faits de répétitions séquentielles improbables ou de situations à la fois simples et complexes, n’ouvrent ni ne ferment le déroulement des choses mais activent le processus de réception du spectateur.

Développant les principaux thèmes du travail de Roman Ondák – temporalité, déplacement et voyage, présence / absence, etc. –, ce livre d'artiste documente le projet éponyme élaboré dans le cadre de la 53e Biennale de Venise.
Sous la forme d'installations discrètes et de performances, le travail complexe de Roman Ondák (né en 1966 à Zilina, Tchécoslovaquie, vit et travaille à Bratislava, Slovaquie) articule une pensée complexe de la représentation et du temps avec une réflexion sur un espace d'exposition déconstruit, questionnant le spectateur dans la perception et la conscience qu'il peut avoir des codes et des comportements sociaux et individuels.
Roman Ondák représente la Slovaquie à la 53e Biennale de Venise au pavillon CZ/SK, du 7 juin au 22 novembre 2009
