The title Artist and her model refers to two things. I have in the recent years started to use more and more other models in my work. I'm especially interested in the way an artist looks at a model, the ‘artist's gaze’ which is neither the male gaze nor the female gaze but something neutral, observing, scrutinising, sometimes surprised or admiring.
In the double portraits of artist and model I try to make this gaze visible. In addition, Artist and her model points to the double identity I have in my photographs: since my very beginning in the 90’s, the artist and the model have often been one and the same.
These new photographs continue the same visual thinking as my previous series The New Painting (2000-2004) and Model Studies (2002-). My work consists of walking with the camera in a back-pack and the tripod under the arm, observing the changing light, looking for the simple landscape. The essential questions are the passage of time, the color of light, the human figure. I’m looking for what we too often lack in the everyday life: calm, wide spaces, surprise, veritable solitude and in compensation a shared experience.

The eccentric French composer Erik Satie put in precise playing instructions for those who perform his compositions. There were lots of these instructions, and they were far more detailed than the traditional largos and fortissimos..
Elina Brotherus has dedicated Large de vue (Breadth of Vision, 2006) to Erik Satie. Large de vue is a 45-part series of photographs, in which pictures she has taken at different times and in different places are combined with the instructions that Satie added to his Aperçus désagréables, completed in 1912. In her youth, Brotherus played this piece for four-handed piano with her teacher. Her teacher’s poetically free translations of the otherwise rather poetic instructions had stayed in her mind for a long time. Now, Satie’s original instructions in French – their meanings ranging from sufficiently slow to real and perceptible – are engraved into the glass covering the photographs. Large de vue is not just exceptional in Brotherus’ art, it is also important. This multipart work can be seen as a kind of synthesis, as a summation of what she had done before it, and as a bridge to all that has happened since. The work intersperses the low and yet lower horizons of The New Painting series (2000-04) with the personal, human-relationships themes from her earliest works (1997-99) and the Model Studies series begun in 2004. Brotherus prefers to seek out places where less means more, places that are already simplified, and where slight variations in light, colour and atmosphere are visible. The pictures in Large de vue are often from the Arctic North or from the shores of the oceans, places where there is a lot of room for light and air. In the majority of the pictures the sky is clear and full of light, often sparkling prismatically like Satie’s or Debussy’s impressionism. Brotherus is herself present in some of the pictures, sometimes seen from very close to, sometimes in a green raincoat with her back to us, like a sign. This recognisable figure anchors the different parts of the work both in each other and in the rest of her production. Large de vue is not a story, nor do we have to read it like a book, even though Satie’s instructions can be rolled round the tongue like the lines of a poem. Nor is this work a conceptual project intended to measure the distance between word and image, or their ability to alter each other’s tone. “The work is like a series of songs or a book of preludes. Each individual image can be looked at and listened to, we can watch how it glistens, and how it makes the others resonate,†is how Brotherus describes it..

Model Studies continues from where my earlier series The New Painting (2000-2004) ends.
Even more pronouncedly than the previous series, Model Studies is not about personal stories nor a documentary about someone's life. The images have been constructed for visual reasons. My attention is attached to light, colours, the rythm of the masses, and to subject matters with classical notions. The figure often turns her back to the spectator. This gesture invites to a peaceful contemplation, not to a confrontation.

«Photography is the new painting», said my friend Edda Jonsdottir, director of i8 gallery in Reykjavik. With this somewhat provocative sentence in mind in June 2000 I started my still ongoing series, “The New Painting.†I use contemporary means of expression (large format color photography), but I owe a lot to the aesthetics of classical figurative painting. With the camera I try to approach the same problems that painters have been dealing with for centuries: light, color, composition, figures in space, projection of the three-dimensional into the two-dimensional. I find these questions fundamental in all visual arts.
The subject matters come from my close surroundings - from where I live, where I travel, with whom I share my time. The images fall into two categories: landscapes, notably the Horizon works (called Horizons, Low Horizons, and Very Low Horizons, depending on the division of the picture plane), and works with the human figure.
Like in my earlier work, I frequently use myself as a model. However, these new works escape from the inherent problem of self-portraiture, the problem of «representing oneself». They do not aim at drawing a psychological portrait of the subject, but rather presenting him/her as an object of investigation, not for the inner properties but for the external ones. The person in the picture is a model, in the same sence as painters have been using models. The human figure offers endless possibilities. How do the figures interact with space and with each other? How does the light reveal the form? What happens if the direction of the gaze changes? The human body in its beauty and its banality never stops to fascinate me.
It is important to me to combine these two categories of work. I like formal simplicity; the landscapes constructed of only a few lines function as resting places for the spectator. The works in “The New Painting†search for beauty and are motivated by it, even if «beauty» might be considered controversial in contemporary art.

The colours of a photographic print are not given; the "correct" answer is not hidden in the negative. It is surprising how much can be done in the darkroom. Choosing the colour of the sky can be just as arbitrary as choosing among pigments of oil paint. This came like a revelation to me when working on the The New Painting. All there is, is a vague impression of "how it was" on the location, and a choise that has to be made by the artist when printing. This is why I have started to take notes, in the spirit of Bonnard, in order to remember what things looked like.
Photography, unlike painting, has a direct link to the reality. This is both its enchantement and its curse. People tend to treat photographs as documents: who is this person, or where is that place? I would prefer that we pay more attention, not only to the subject matter itself, but to how it is shown: what visual choises has the artist made, how has he/she solved certain problems, what is the structure of the image, the mood of it, how are the colours tuned? How does it affect us as viewers?

The form of a mountain is revealed at the passage of a cloud. A continuation of the research started in the video Miroir, 2001.

Hanna Brotherus is a dancer and a choreographer, who has three sons. Brotherus, Tyttö was shot after the birth of her fourth child. The title refers to the fact that for the first time "Brotherus, Boy" was not written at the foot of the cot at the clinic. (N.B. the Finnish word "tyttö" stands for "girl". It is the habit at Finnish maternity clinics to write on the bed the surname of the family and the sex of the baby at the foot of the cot.) The dancer advances of a road, and when the rehearsed choreography ends, she steps into the forest, into the unknown. There she encounters the new child. It is the mother's way towards her daughter, a daughter who came into life through all obstacles.

The Baigneurs video installation portrays nude swimmers in Finnish nature. The form is cyclic, repetitive: a swimmer plunges into water and returns, waves hit the shore; only the places and figures change. The bodies are simultaneously beautiful and banal. Baigneurs examines beauty through the (National) Romanticist landscape and the classical bather motif. The water plays as important a role as the figures: its colour, the reflection or rippling of the surface. Baigneurs is a "sister work" to my photographs of the same theme. It is interesting to compare them to each other. The still photographs easily fall within the the bather tradition in painting (nude by the waterfront), whereas the movement in the video brings in uncanny realism which is absent in photography or painting.
