Running all along the walls of gb agency’s exhibition space, the work Fluid Border (2009) presented in Roman Ondák’s solo exhibition consists of a transparent hosepipe in which water flows continuously.
Reflection on the exhibition spaces, the work emphasizes on their architecture in a dynamical way, as an attempt to draw their ever-changing physical and intellectual borders, through the exhibitions and the works they host repeatedly. Furthermore, if the floor line of Fluid Border underlines the visible architecture of the exhibition space, it also goes beyond on what is usually hidden to the visitor by disappearing through a wall, suggesting its possible continuity beyond the reach of gaze. The movement of liquid in the hosepipe and its continuous but tortuous journey can then be seen as a metaphor of the stream and flux of ideas exposed or concealed in art spaces.
Exploring the space between art and everyday life, the work of Roman Ondák consists of subtle interventions into sociocultural structures, which denote processes in society that are often outside of direct public visibility. Staging temporary situations and imaginative constructions, his work questions the viewer's perception and consciousness of social codes, communication patterns and personal behaviors. As often in his work, the exhibition therefore becomes a performative and a staging area where different temporalities intersect and where individual experience mingles with social exchanges. The exhibition space thus becomes the receptacle of human experience, one that questions representation and interpretation, reality and its staging.
Roman Ondák will represent Slovakia at the 53rd Venice Biennale in the CZ/SK pavillion from June 7 to November 22, 2009.
